Proposed laws may make parenting time more equitable

Research has long shown the negative effects of divorce on children in New Jersey and across the country. However, recent studies have found that children of divorced parents who spend a considerable amount of time in both homes are less impacted by their parents' divorce. In light of the new research, many state legislatures have been revisiting the family court rules regarding custody and parenting time.

Reexamining child support in New Jersey

In 2011, fathers who owed child support to the child's mother paid only an average of 61 percent of what was ordered. However, this does not always mean that those who didn't pay the full amount were deadbeats. Instead, a recent study shows that fathers in New Jersey and around the country who are cash poor try to help out in other ways such as buying diapers or paying educational expenses. These contributions average about $60 per month, according to the researchers.

Attitudes regarding child support

In many cases, divorcing parents in New Jersey and around the country who are not awarded primary custody of their child may be ordered to pay child support as part of the divorce decree. In some states, the amount awarded is determined by established guidelines that only look at the noncustodial parent's income. Many paying parents often do not believe this system to be fair.

Divorce mistakes can have lasting financial consequences

A divorce involving couples in New Jersey can sometimes be a complicated legal process. Financial advisers and family law attorneys sometimes see costly mistakes that people make during the divorce proceedings. They can offer advice for avoiding some of the biggest financial errors that can have a negative impact for years after the divorce.
