Statistics for marital status by age

Feb 19, 2016 | Divorce

Single and married individuals in New Jersey might be interested to learn about the marital status of people based on their age. The statistical categories are divided into never married, in their first marriage, widowed, separated, divorced and married more than once. The data is based on a 2013 individual census that was a part of the Integrated Public Microdata Sample project run by the Minnesota Population Center.

According to the data, the lowest proportion of individuals who were never married was about 2 percent at around the age of 92. About 30 percent of individuals aged 35 reported never being married. The highest proportion of individuals who were in their first marriage was about 52 percent for people around the age of 37. Also in this category were about 43 percent of 60-year-olds who were in their first marriage.

The data also shows that the highest proportion of individuals who were widowed was about 73 percent for people aged 95. At 65, about 10 percent of individuals reported their marital status as widowed. The highest proportion of individuals who were separated, divorced or married more than once was 42 percent for people aged 59. The lowest proportion was less than 5 percent for people aged between 20 and 25.

By comparison, more individuals reported having ended a marriage in their 20s between 1960 and 1980. During the same period, more people reported being in a second or third marriage in their late 20s. Compared to those two decades, the data further shows that people older than 40 were more likely to be separated, divorced or in a second or later marriage in 2013.

Divorce proceedings are often stressful for both spouses whether or not they are able to make decisions amicably. Although the spouses could make their own agreements, many of them ask for help from divorce attorneys to ensure that their settlements address every current matter and problems that could arise in the future.
