Kaley Cuoco, Ryan Sweeting divorce

May 18, 2016 | Divorce

New Jersey residents who are fans of the hit tv series “The Big Bang Theory” may have been following actress Kaley Cuoco’s split with former professional tennis player Ryan Sweeting. Their divorce became final on May 6.

Cuoco filed for divorce in September 2015, citing irreconcilable differences, after less than two years of marriage. The two had a prenuptial agreement. According to the agreement, spousal support might be agreed upon, but it would be temporary. As a result, by November 2016, Cuoco will pay Sweeting $165,000 in two installments.

The prenuptial agreement also apparently dealt with legal bills. Sweeting has an outstanding legal bill of $10,000 that Cuoco will pay. She will also pay $55,000 of Sweeting’s other legal bills. Altogether, she is paying roughly a quarter of a million dollars. Cuoco has been in a new relationship with an equestrian for some time.

Divorce is often a difficult time, and people who are ending their marriages must negotiate issues such as property division and child custody or allow a judge to do so. The advantage of doing so outside of the courtroom is that each may be happier with the outcome. Mediation is a cooperative rather than an adversarial process, and if children are involved, there are additional reasons to attempt a resolution this way. Children tend to adjust better in lower-conflict divorces, and mediation might result in parents with better negotiating skills. Unfortunately, reaching a solution through mediation is not always possible. Litigation may be necessary. In either case, people may want to let their attorneys know ahead of time what their goals are and what they are willing to compromise on.
