Divorce rates among young adults and baby boomers

New Jersey couples who are considering marriage may be interested to learn that the divorce trends are changing. According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, the rate of divorce for those under the age of 50 is decreasing while the rate for those 50 and older is on the rise.

The study shows that, in 2015, 10 out of every 1,000 married individuals who were 50 or over were divorced. This number is up from 5 individuals for every 1,000 married persons in 1990. This increasing trend has been attributed to the baby boomers who also had an unprecedented rate of divorce when the group was in their young adulthood. The divorce rates for baby boomers may be increasing due to the fact that second marriages are often less stable than first marriages.

However, the divorce rates for those between the ages of 25 to 39 and 40 to 49 are still higher. In 2015, 30 individuals out of every 1,000 married persons between the ages of 25 to 39 were divorced. For those between the ages of 40 to 49, 21 adults per 1,000 married individuals were divorced.

Starting divorce proceedings can be very difficult, especially if the person filing for divorce is age 50 or older. Getting a divorce at this age could potentially mean starting over or even putting off retiring for a few more years. A family law attorney might assist in negotiating a comprehensive settlement agreement that would provide suitable property division terms.
